Armistice Day Demo

lyrics

Boston to Tulsa
to live with my sister.
She said there was work there,
I just called 'cause I miss her.
And I can bring my tool bag,
and I'll piss clean.
She said she was glad to hear it.
I said "I know what you mean."
But I abandoned the highway
for an empty city lot.
Got on my four way,
and put her on blocks.
Right next to the VA:
maybe they'll fix my cough.
If I find my old ID,
I think it's in the glove box.
I'll get a room and save for a new transmission.

I made it to New York.
This ain't no glamour or glitz.
The holes in my t-shirt
matched the scars on my wrists.
I got 300 in bills,
maxed out credit card.
A couple of pills
for when life gets hard.
But I made my way
to a receptionist's desk.
He told me to wait-
I knew I wouldn't be next.
The doctor arrived.
She stared at the floor.
Told me to smile.
Said "dental's on four."
With any luck, it's a covered operation.

They fixed the abscess,
then cut me loose.
Said "quit smokin' Winstons,
you'll lose more than a tooth."
But the streets were so busy!
What could they expect?
With nothing else for me
but a car that's still wrecked.
So I went to the station
down by the concourse.
I knew there'd be faces
for the fireworks.
When the stairs turned to bleachers.
And my bench to a stage.
Turning to theater,
I begged for some change.
I scrawled on some cardboard.
I held out my hands.
Well, I'd played my part:
I'd killed for rich men.
Thought that was the price of admission to heaven on the fourth of July.
